Whenever we need a mountain fix but cant venture so far as to require an overnight stay we drive to the Linn Cove Viaduct and Rough Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Grandfather Mountain. The original mountain day trip is our most hiked trail in the Blue Ridge. The Linn Cove Visitors Center that is located on the South end of the viaduct offers up plenty of information about this unique structure along with a hiking trail that provides the best views of the viaduct from both underneath and above. The other picture-perfect spot of Linn Cove Viaduct is a little obscure but easy to find once you know where to look.

A short less than one mile loop hike lets you see the viaduct from all angles while enjoying a lovely walk through the woods. From the access point below the Linn Cove Viaduct the Tanawha Trail passes underneath the Viaduct and ascends steeply up stone steps past an enormous boulder wall. It was completed in 1987 at a cost of 10 million and was the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be finished.
